"It is going on 7 years old. I have only 47,000 miles on it, but have never had any problems with it. The handling is terrific, ramps signed at 35mph can easliy and securely be taken at 60-65mph!! Very secure and predictable handling. I do wish that the engine had more power and in town gas mileage isn't great but average of 32mpg on the highway. Comfort and visibility is good. It is the one car that I have owned that I have always liked. The CD changer ate a CD the other day however, and will not spit it out. :("

"I bought this 02 ford focus used off ebay. I was the second owner technically, as the seller was a dealer that took it on a trade in. If its not broke, I dont fix it. I change my oil at 5k mile intervals, standard oil(no synthetic). This car has been great! I replaced what appears to be the original spark plugs at 203072 miles, cause the engine started to stumble. That fixed that issue. The car now has 220k miles and I just went 8k miles between oil changes and it hadnt lost any oil. The oil change shop said my coolant was bad and so is my fuel filter. Well they should be, they are original from the factory. I didnt replace the fuel filter, as the car still gets 30+mpg. The timing belt broke at 145k miles, got towed to the dealer and they put on a new one. They said it should have been replaced around 75k miles. Yeah OK, what ever. They wanted to change the accessory drive belt while they were in there, I said nope. Its still working fine to this day! The front sway bar bushings were gone when I got the car, never fixed that. Car handles very well without it. Never flushed any of the fluids, think that is a gimmick. Ive done brake pads on the front, NEVER checked the rears yet. Front wheel bearing went bad on passenger side, dealer suggested replacing both. I did and now it seems the passenger side is going bad again. I replaced the passenger side half shaft, turns out I dont think it was the problem(think it was that bearing). The door handle broke on the drivers door. I swapped it with the rear passenger handle, problem solved. The passenger rear window mechanism broke, havent fixed that. Im 6'3" @230lbs so I rate this vehicle at 2 stars for leg room. Theres plenty of head room though. I have had an issue with the 10spoke factory 15" rims. Seems they bend easy and are hard to find straight ones. Over all Id say this has been a great car, and well worth the $5800 I paid for it."

"Spacious, comfortable, great visibility out the windows.. kept control (more or less) when I was hit on the highway!Good milage.

Only downfall is that it takes bumps pretty rough and it is not good in the snow - good lesson just to go slow, but so far, as a commuter in Maine, I have made it to work in every storm

2 not-so-major repairs in 3 years and 80,000 miles.

"Bought mine new in 2005,2D hatchback, employee pricing, has automatic, cruise, power windows, CD...all I need. Fun to drive, great to get into small parking spaces, able to move pretty big things with the hatchback...too bad they stopped making it. I get around 33 MPG highway...sure was nice when gas was over $4...the people in their big SUVs stopped snickering...."

"I bought this car new in 02. I bought one new in 2000 too. I will buy another when my 02 is through.
I have had no problems whatsoever. I just put gas in it and go.Quality is equal to or better than any car in it's class. I would recommend it if you need a small nimble thrifty car. It is cheap to buy and cheap to own. The best part is it is not a rice burner.

"I own the 2001 Focus se wagon. The car gets comments where ever I go.People love the style and color(I have the silver)I looked at the newer models but they did not have the cool cockpit feeling in the front. The 2001 has the instrumentation done right.I sat in a newer model and it felt sterile compared to the 2001.I love the handling and ergonomics of the driver side controls. The repairs have been the normal brakes and I had to put in new front shocks.Thats it.When I had been used to tooling around in sports cars my new family needed a vehicle with more room(we have tail gated with it and slept in the back.I feel I got the family part of a car well covered and for me(Dad)a little sportiness in the style and cockpit feel I love in a sports car."

"I have a 2002 Focus SE and have put a large amount of money into repairs in the 2 years I have had the car. These repairs included: engine head, numerous hoses, ERG valve and sensor, starter, and both axle shafts. I would not recommend this car to anyone. Hopefully everyone else's Focus's work a lot better than mine!"

"The SVT is basically just a zx3 where everything is just a little bit better. The chassis has been tweaked to be a bit stiffer, it has a few subtle exterior changes as well and interior changes which make it distinctive without being tacky or over-done, and the engine and drive-train have been given an overhaul. Overall, it drives very well. Sure, the ride is a bit stiff, but it's not going to give you back problems. The engine, which is just a modified version of the normal zx3 engine with 40 more horses, delivers plenty of power very smoothly. The 6-speed gearbox is a fantastic addition and really makes the car fun to drive. No, it won't be blowing any mustangs off the road with it's straight line performance, but it's not slow either. Where this thing really shines is in cornering ability and value for money. Equip a Golf GTi to the same spec and you'll be paying easily 5 grand more, and don't think that euro tuned suspension is any better than the SVT's, because I've driven both and they feel very similar. Yes, the interior plastics feel cheep, but that's a small price to pay really when you consider that this car drives and feels like a car that's considerably more expensive."

"The SOHC (single overhead cam) engine was a very poor motor and design by Ford. This car has had two engines go bad and not worth the money. DOHC's have better rating and cheaper to replace if needed."

"Bought this car used with 14,000 miles on it in 2004, now in 2009 it has 50,000 and it has served me well. Bought it for $10,900 and I think I got a bargain. I change the oil every 3000 miles and do all the recommended services. Could get better gas mileage, I get 27+ city (LA driving w/ AC on) & 36 highway. I have a Wagon and it has tons of room. Room for 3 average adults (ok, 3 slender adults) in back seat and suitcases behind. Easy to put seats down and up and the hatch back is super convenient for throwing things in the back. I slept in the back of it on vacation once when I forgot to reserve a hotel room in advance. I drove from Seattle to LA with all my worldly possessions in this car and went through the mountains in a snow storm and didn't have to put chains on. It handles really well and looks good too. It's paid for so I'm driving it until it dies. I highly recommend this car for families and anyone who is budget minded."

"Good value compared to other cars in group. I get about 34 MPG with the automatic and mostly highway driving. Handling is very nimble and power is adequate. The SES trim level has nice features. Seats are comfortable and visiblity is good. Wind noise is noticable, but it is a small car. Front room is good; maybe a little narrow. Hatchback is pretty good on cargo room. Two adults or carseats in back seat is do-able; three is near impossible."

"I love my car so much! I had one and I hit a deer doing 75mph and I was not hurt at all. It did minor damage to my car and because of the safty of it I was not hurt, just my feeling when I hit the stupid deer that thought he was stonger than my focus! I swear I will NEVER drive anything but a Focus! I could have been easily hurt if I was in a different type of car, but because they are built tuff I was not hurt, not even a scratch on me! I LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!"

"My sister got a 2001, I had a 2001 wagon and traded it for the 2005 after I put 160K on it. We haul kids, pets, gear. As long as the snow isn't too deep, the FWD just handles great. It isn't a quiet ride, but it is comfortable and an excellent value. I think Ford "focused" on the engine/powertrain and not on the interior. None of the three Focuses mentioned above have had anything more than normal service issues, nothing major. And the 5 speed gets 34-38 mpg consistently, the automatic 30+. Great little car!"

"We bought our car used 1 year ago. It had low mileage on it. My daughter has driven it back and forth from college and she loves it. It has great pickup and rides smoothly. The interior seems so big for such a small car. The cargo area of the hatchback allowed her to move herself into the dorm. Gas mileage is pretty good too.
I will say that no one likes the location of the cup holders though.
Unfortunately, someone hit her on the highway and her car was totaled. She and her passenger were perfectly fine. The driver airbag protected my daughter although the passenger airbag did not deploy. The seats went back which lessened the whiplash impact on the girls. If you were to see a picture you would see the cargo area smashed in with a little front damage. But the passenger area is intact. For such a small car to withstand this accident and have NO injuries or pain is a major plus. We are looking for another one.

"I have owned my Street Edition for 7 years and it has been the most reliable car I've ever driven. I'm coming up on 150,000 miles in the next few months and it still drives like the day I bought it. Seats are comfortable, 6 CD/radio is great, and on the highway at cruising speed I see 32-34 mpg with an automatic transmission! Never had any huge issues with the car at all witht eh exception of a broken front spring which Ford replaced as a warranty issue. Regular oil changes, tire rotations and basic care wil keep this car on the road well toward 200,000 miles. It's economical, it looks good and I love to drive it. The only thing I wish it had was a little more power from the Zetec engine, 150hp or so would have been nice."
