"The transmission went on our 01 Ford Escape twice within 1 1/2 years. So we traded for an 06 Ford Focus. We do not recommend the Focus. It is not comfortable for tall people (6.0 feet +) or long road trips. Road noise is apperant. When the two back windows are rolled down there is a pulsating sound that I've never had with previous vehicles. After two years of ownership, the A/C quit working. After three years of ownership we are replacing the third set of tires because the tires wear so unevenly. We have heard the same story from other Focus owners about the tires. We are not happy with this vehicle and would not recommend it."

"Apparently there is some problem with the engine design. I took good care of the car and one day its just stopped running. It was like no fuel was getting to the engine. Mechanic said only one cylinder had ANY sign of compression. Very dissappointed. Will not buy another Ford."

"The car is an ok car. Engine runs smoothly but i think everything else is about ready to break of fall off. Not alot of problems yet, after i got the new fuel pump(which is on recall) car runs better. The car does not seem to be holding up very well, wearing down quickly. GET WHAT U PAY FOR IM NOT IMPRESSED FORD."

"Bought it new 5/2004. 66k miles and I haven't had any problem with it, not even a light bulb. So far its cost me gas, oil, a set of tires, a set of spark plugs, and air filters. It gets 34mpg hwy, 25mpg city. I've driven it cross country 3 times. It's reasonably comfortable and has enough power for me. Ford, in it's inexplicable lack of wisdom, discontinued this model and the wagon, which are the two most practical models in the Focus line. I can get an amazing amount of stuff into the back of mine and would have bought a wagon had there been one available at my dealer. My only complaint is that it's noisy at highway speeds, but mine came with the 16" rims and wide tires. And being a Ford, it's resale value isn't wonderful so I think this model would be a good value to purchase. I'm planning to hold onto mine until it's dead."

"I have owned this for 1 year. I found my hwy mileage is more like the city miles (28). I do appxx. 90% hiway driving. I also don't like that the dome light is in front. You cannot see anything in the backseats when it is dark because it is not between the front and back seats."

"I bought a 2003 ZX5 with a manual transmission for the fuel economy. I have almost 90,000 miles on it and had only three major problems. The ignition cylinder failed (common problem with this car), the clutch master cylinder leaked, and the OE Blaupunkt radio failed (hard to find a replacement for this 2-DIN size). Other than fluids and wipers, I haven't had to do much for maintenance. Great fuel economy - about 30 mpg mostly city driving and close to 35 mpg on extended highway trips. It handles great for an economy car, and the hatch provides great utility (I hauled an under the cabinet microwave and a dishwasher on separate occasions). Too bad Ford stopped selling the 5-door model."

"We bought this car new in 2004 and haven't taken it back to the Ford dealer for anything but oil changes. The car has had zero problems or repairs. It is also a joy to drive. It has plenty of power and also gets 34 mpg on highway driving. It would be hard to convince me that a Honda or a Toyota would be a better buy. I also have two other family members who have similar experiences with their Ford Focus."

"I have had my Focus for almost 120,000 miles. Everything is still in great shape. No problems yet, mileage is still going strong, engine still has plenty of power. This car has worked out great for me. I hear the new ones are even better. I recommend the Focus to anyone who wants a great small car."

"It is going on 7 years old. I have only 47,000 miles on it, but have never had any problems with it. The handling is terrific, ramps signed at 35mph can easliy and securely be taken at 60-65mph!! Very secure and predictable handling. I do wish that the engine had more power and in town gas mileage isn't great but average of 32mpg on the highway. Comfort and visibility is good. It is the one car that I have owned that I have always liked. The CD changer ate a CD the other day however, and will not spit it out. :("

"I bought this 02 ford focus used off ebay. I was the second owner technically, as the seller was a dealer that took it on a trade in. If its not broke, I dont fix it. I change my oil at 5k mile intervals, standard oil(no synthetic). This car has been great! I replaced what appears to be the original spark plugs at 203072 miles, cause the engine started to stumble. That fixed that issue. The car now has 220k miles and I just went 8k miles between oil changes and it hadnt lost any oil. The oil change shop said my coolant was bad and so is my fuel filter. Well they should be, they are original from the factory. I didnt replace the fuel filter, as the car still gets 30+mpg. The timing belt broke at 145k miles, got towed to the dealer and they put on a new one. They said it should have been replaced around 75k miles. Yeah OK, what ever. They wanted to change the accessory drive belt while they were in there, I said nope. Its still working fine to this day! The front sway bar bushings were gone when I got the car, never fixed that. Car handles very well without it. Never flushed any of the fluids, think that is a gimmick. Ive done brake pads on the front, NEVER checked the rears yet. Front wheel bearing went bad on passenger side, dealer suggested replacing both. I did and now it seems the passenger side is going bad again. I replaced the passenger side half shaft, turns out I dont think it was the problem(think it was that bearing). The door handle broke on the drivers door. I swapped it with the rear passenger handle, problem solved. The passenger rear window mechanism broke, havent fixed that. Im 6'3" @230lbs so I rate this vehicle at 2 stars for leg room. Theres plenty of head room though. I have had an issue with the 10spoke factory 15" rims. Seems they bend easy and are hard to find straight ones. Over all Id say this has been a great car, and well worth the $5800 I paid for it."

"Spacious, comfortable, great visibility out the windows.. kept control (more or less) when I was hit on the highway!Good milage.
Only downfall is that it takes bumps pretty rough and it is not good in the snow - good lesson just to go slow, but so far, as a commuter in Maine, I have made it to work in every storm
2 not-so-major repairs in 3 years and 80,000 miles."

"Bought mine new in 2005,2D hatchback, employee pricing, has automatic, cruise, power windows, CD...all I need. Fun to drive, great to get into small parking spaces, able to move pretty big things with the hatchback...too bad they stopped making it. I get around 33 MPG highway...sure was nice when gas was over $4...the people in their big SUVs stopped snickering...."

"I bought this car new in 02. I bought one new in 2000 too. I will buy another when my 02 is through. I have had no problems whatsoever. I just put gas in it and go.Quality is equal to or better than any car in it's class. I would recommend it if you need a small nimble thrifty car. It is cheap to buy and cheap to own. The best part is it is not a rice burner."

"I own the 2001 Focus se wagon. The car gets comments where ever I go.People love the style and color(I have the silver)I looked at the newer models but they did not have the cool cockpit feeling in the front. The 2001 has the instrumentation done right.I sat in a newer model and it felt sterile compared to the 2001.I love the handling and ergonomics of the driver side controls. The repairs have been the normal brakes and I had to put in new front shocks.Thats it.When I had been used to tooling around in sports cars my new family needed a vehicle with more room(we have tail gated with it and slept in the back.I feel I got the family part of a car well covered and for me(Dad)a little sportiness in the style and cockpit feel I love in a sports car."

"I have a 2002 Focus SE and have put a large amount of money into repairs in the 2 years I have had the car. These repairs included: engine head, numerous hoses, ERG valve and sensor, starter, and both axle shafts. I would not recommend this car to anyone. Hopefully everyone else's Focus's work a lot better than mine!"
